After Striking Okinawa, Vongfong Weakens to Tropical Storm Over Mainland Japan

Vongfongiss

Typhoon Vongfong, once the most intense tropical cyclone on Earth in 2014, has weakened to a tropical storm as it races northeastward over mainland Japan

The storm is still packing gusty winds and heavy rain, with flooding and mudslides its greatest threat, since it is hitting Japan almost exactly one week after Typhoon Phanfone.

The storm will peak in Kyushu, Shikoku and western Honshu on Monday into Monday night, local time, according to The Weather Channel, and then reach Tokyo and Osaka on Monday night into Tuesday. The storm is not expected to bring damaging winds to Tokyo, but it could produce heavy rains that lead to flooding problems.
