Farmers here in the southeast have made great progress in the soybean harvest during the past week. Steinbach Farm Production Advisor Earl Bargen says producers were able to take advantage of some very nice October weather in recent days.
"Towards the end of the week through the past long weekend a lot got done, especially in the soybeans. Talking with a few guys, one guy was finished, one other farm is about 90% done. This past weekend was very productive."
Bargen estimates the soybean harvest went from 30% complete last week to 70% complete this week. He adds yields range from 35 to 45 bushels per acre.
Meanwhile, Bargen says it appears grain corn is close to being ready for harvest.
"The corn is at that stage where it is mature and, like every year, it's a matter of dry down. I imagine guys are wanting to get their beans in first. There may be some acres that have been harvested but I haven't heard of anyone taking corn so far."
