Josh Giesbrecht at his Hull, Quebec office
A former Steinbach resident who lives in Ottawa is stunned by the events in our capital city today. A gunman shot a soldier at the Canadian War Memorial and gunmen also opened fire in Parliament.
Josh Giesbrecht works for the federal government in an office across the river from the Parliament buildings in Hull, Quebec. Speaking to us at 11:15 a.m. Central Time, he says it was a normal day until mid-morning.
"I literally passed Parliament Hill on the bus around 9:00 and everything was as usual there and I got to work. I started my day like I usually do, got an alert (on Twitter) and thought about it a little bit and it was actually shortly after that all of us got called into an emergency meeting and were told what was happening, that we were in lockdown. Basically everything is shut down right now and everyone is frantically trying to find out if their loved ones are safe."
Giesbrecht choked up as he described his emotions on a day like this in a country where we are used to moving around freely.
"Worried, very worried for my friends. I've just never had to think about something like that, that people I know, aren't safe. And the other one (emotion) would be, just angry, very, very upset with whomever is responsible for this and I hope they get brought to justice."
