School Speed Zones Approved, SCHS Wants Safer Crossing

2014 10 school speed2Areas in grey are where speeds will be reduced.

Steinbach city council gave final approval Tuesday to a By-Law for reduced speed zones at Woodlawn, Southwood and Stonybrook schools. Mayor Chris Goertzen says speeds will be reduced to 30 kilometres per hour during school hours. He adds signs should go up in the next while.

"I believe administration will work quickly to order signs and make sure that everything is in place so that we can have those speed zones advertised so that people know that they're there and then enforced, in time, as well."

Meanwhile, Goertzen says Steinbach Christian High School would like a safer way for students to cross Highway #12 to get to school. He says discussions are underway with Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation to improve pedestrian movement at the Stonebridge/Millwork corner in the next year or two.

"As we move forward in the next year and a half, we' re going to be seeing a lot of upgrades along PTH #12 North. At Stonebridge Crossing, there will be some adjustments made to make sure that pedestrians can cross there. Whether it's a full pedestrian crossing has not been decided yet."
