All six Steinbach city council incumbents were re-elected Wednesday. Earl Funk had the highest vote total followed by Michael Zwaagstra, Jac Siemens, Susan Penner, John Fehr and Cari Penner.
Mayor Chris Goertzen, who was re-elected by acclamation, says the re-election of all the incumbents is a first for the city.
"It's very rare that you have all incumbents re-elected. I don't think in Steinbach's history as a town or a city that we've actually had all the same councillors serve two terms in a row. It's great because we can continue the work we've done. At the same time, you have to feel for Ryan Derksen who worked very hard and presented an optimistic, positive approach to how he'd like to be on council."
Goertzen adds the election outcome shows that the citizens of Steinbach are happy with the work that city council has done for the past four years.
"Well I think this council has worked very well together and I think people recognize the work that we've done. We don't all see eye-to-eye on everything. We have good discussions, but at the same time, we come up with good solutions and those varying viewpoints often help us to come up with better solutions. I think we've worked well together and I look forward to another four years of working well together."
