Terry Hayward
Provencher Liberal candidate Terry Hayward feels the Harper Conservative Government was too hasty in sending the Canadian Air Force into the war against the Islamic State in Iraq and Levant, or I-SIL. Hayward says the opposition leaders were not properly briefed on the matter and says the Conservatives then cut off debate in Parliament before using their majority to push through the decision.
"My concern is that there may have been other things that we could have been doing in a much better manner to support other nations that are going into this battle. We have limited resources of aircraft and ammunition but we have a great expertise when it comes to humanitarian aid. I think that's an area that we should have concentrated on."
Hayward says there's no question that I-SIL is a serious world threat. But he maintains the federal government needs to examine its response more carefully rather than rushing to send the Air Force into battle.
"I believe we should have had more talk in Parliament. We should have had more information available. When you've got only one party standing up to say let's send in the bombers and you've got other parties saying, wait a minute, let's talk this out, is there something else we could be doing, I think we could have found a better role for Canada in this dispute."
Provencher Conservative MP Ted Falk has previously said his government did the right thing on this matter.
