Manitoba auto dealers are on pace to set a record for new vehicle sales this year. Kent Ledingham of Steinbach is President of the Manitoba Motor Dealers Association. He says 2014 has been good for car dealers right across the province.
"It's been a very good new car sales year so far in 2014. All the manufacturers have been very aggressive with their finance programs and that's really driven the new car market along nicely."
For example, new vehicle sales in Manitoba during September were up 17.6 per cent from the same month last year. Ledingham notes the used car market is a little bit slower which he attributes, in part, to the strong new vehicle sales. He adds there is also a shortage of good used cars.
Ledingham says it's hard to know whether the new car sales momentum will carry forward into next year.
"It's always a little bit of wait and see what happens in the car business. You can't get too excited about the highs and can't get too down about the lows. Here in Manitoba, the highs aren't too high and the lows aren't too low as we chug along very nicely with our economy here."
As to which vehicles are selling the best, Ledingham says trucks are always strong in Manitoba due to the rural markets. But he adds everything is pretty strong right now across the board.
