Mysterious Camper Fire Near Grunthal

2014 10 trailer

A woman from the Grunthal area says something very strange happened on her farm Wednesday morning.

Bonita Friesen explains her husband was doing morning chores when he discovered a smoldering camper, located about fifty feet from their chicken barn. The camper was not theirs and the Friesens are now trying to figure who owns it, why did it end up on their property and what caused it to burn to the ground?

"Our first thoughts are that somebody maybe had trouble and wanted to take it off the road, which would be fine," she says. But Friesen adds if that was the case, why wouldn't they leave a note or come back in the morning to follow up. Furthermore, she says if that is what happened, why did they park it so far down the driveway?

Another suggestion is that it was parked there and then torched. But, the camper trailer that was approximately twenty-eight feet long was left on blocks and it would seem strange for someone to take such good care of it only to light it on fire.

Friesen is thankful for the direction of the wind Wednesday morning. The camper burned about fifty feet from their chicken barn, filled with eighteen thousand baby chickens and a lot of straw.

"If this wind would have been coming from the north or west, I would hazard a guess that the barn would have gone in flames," says Bonita who adds she is also thankful that the propane tank attached to the camper did not blow up.

Friesen has located the serial number and says she plans to locate the owner.
